This is more of a ramble than a review, and there’s some profanity in there, too. You have been warned.
I occasionally read erotica, and I’ve found some pretty good novels (and plenty of terrible ones) over the years. Fifty Shades of Gray, however, takes the cake for the single most terrible thing I’ve ever read, ever. It’s worse than Twilight (yes, I read Twilight, sue me.) Much, much worse.
E.L. James has managed to create a shallow, boring, thoroughly unsympathetic main character (Anastasia Steele - probably named for the pornstar Lex Steele?) who made me cringe and roll my eyes for half the scenes she was in. Ana Steele has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, other than perhaps the fact that she likes books. That’s it. She’s supposed to be plain and unattractive, yet she has three guys fussing over her, one of whom is a billionaire S&M playboy guy. That practically screams Mary Sue.
And then, Ana Steele is a disgrace to every well-written female character, ever. Her characterization is inconsistent, for one, and so are her reactions to most situations. I can buy into the whole ‘naive virgin seduced by billionaire S&M playboy guy’ act, but up to a point.
In one scene, Ana receives her first corporal punishment (for something trivial, but I guess there’s no shades of gray - lol, see what I did there? - in S&M… I wouldn’t know, meh). She doesn’t take it very well, but instead of telling her asshole of a control-freak boyfriend where to shove it, she stays with him and eventually is subjected to more of the same. That bothers me immensely. No self-respecting woman should compromise on that, ever, end of story.
Anyway, this isn’t just an Anastasia Steele bashing post, although she certainly is terrible enough to warrant plenty more hate where the above came from. E.L. James, who’s probably smart to write under a penname, really, has little to no literary talent (I daresay she’s probably the R.A. Knaak of erotica). She disregards even the most basic rules of dialogue. Nouns in the vocative case should be preceded by a vowel (i.e. “Listen to me, Ana” not “Listen to me Ana”), a mistake that’s consistent throughout the book. Character actions should have their own paragraph rather than be appended after a line spoken by someone else.
And then, there was one instance of ‘you’re’ instead of ‘your’ that somehow slipped the mind of both the ‘writer’ (sorry, she is not a writer in my book) and whoever proofread the thing. “You’re stepfather is quite a taciturn”? Really!?
I finished the book just to see if it gets better at any point. It doesn’t. It was a bloody waste of my time.
Wikipedia says that Fifty Shades of Grey is a New York Times #1 bestselling erotic fiction. This seriously makes me wonder what kind of crap people read nowadays that this steaming pile of utter garbage became a #1 in anything other than sucking so hard.
